Frequently asked questions

Which Amazon Polly voices can I use in Amazon Connect?

Amazon Connect uses Amazon Polly for text-to-speech. Choose the language and voice in the Set voice flow block; the voices offered depend on the language and your Connect Region. Neural voices sound more natural than standard ones, and the voice stays set for the rest of the contact until another Set voice block changes it.

What is the difference between standard, neural, long-form and generative voices?

Standard voices use older concatenative synthesis and are cheapest. Neural voices sound more natural and are the usual choice for IVR. Long-form voices are tuned for reading long passages, and generative voices are the most expressive and human-like. Prices per million characters rise in the same order.

How much does Amazon Polly cost?

In US East, Amazon Polly costs $4 per million characters for standard voices, $16 for neural, $30 for generative and $100 for long-form, with a free tier for new accounts. Text-to-speech inside Amazon Connect flows is included in Connect usage; Polly charges apply when you call Polly directly.

Which Polly voices are bilingual?

Aditi and Kajal speak both Indian English and Hindi, and Hala and Zayd speak Gulf Arabic and English, switching language within the same text. They are marked bilingual in the table.

How do I make Polly speak in a newsreader style?

The newscaster speaking style is available with the neural engine for Joanna, Matthew, Amy and Lupe. Use the SSML tag <amazon:domain name="news"> around your text. The SSML builder on this site can generate it.

Practical guide

Choosing an Amazon Polly voice

Amazon Polly offers four voice types:

  • Standard — the original voices; cheapest, and the most widely available.
  • Neural — more natural; the usual choice for IVR prompts and Lex bots.
  • Long-form — tuned for reading long passages such as articles.
  • Generative — the most expressive and human-sounding.

Not every voice comes in every type, and availability differs by AWS Region, so check the voice in the Region you deploy to.

In Amazon Connect

  • Use a Set voice block early in the flow to choose language and voice; it applies to the rest of the contact until changed.
  • Set the matching Lex bot locale and voice so the bot and the flow sound the same.
  • Use SSML for pauses, emphasis, phone numbers and dates — the SSML builder generates the tags.
  • For recorded prompts, convert audio with the audio prompt converter.
